"TREATING PEOPLE WITH DIGNITY IN COLLIER COUNTY"

|
With 6 months of the budget year passed, the Salvation Army of Collier County is seeing a 60% increase in Collier residents requesting assistance with rent and utilities and a 100% increase in food distribution. Overall the Naples Corps is already $50,000 over budget in social services. That level cannot be sustained for long. The Salvation Army works directly with landlords, utility companies and pharmacies, but does not hand out cash to applicants. However, food is distributed to residents and their families from our Estey Ave office.
Captain Castillo, the Corps Area Coordinator said that, "He had not seen so many first time applicants in the past. People are requesting assistance that have never asked for help before.
Many are professional people who have been laid off or had hours reduced and with the increasing cost of food and fuel they cannot meet all their bills. When people come here they are often embarrassed to ask for help. We at the Salvation Army treat people with dignity, and we know it is difficult for them."

Throughout Florida the Salvation Army is seeing increased demand for services and thus an expansion of services by the Army and this is happening in a climate of a downturn in fundraising and funding because of the falling economy. Many charitable organizations are being asked to help more. In Collier the demand at St. Matthews House and at Saint Vincent De Paul's is increasing.
The Salvation Army has served people through two World Wars, recessions, the Great Depression and other challenging times in American history. There is always a need, even in economically sound periods, but our services are most important during these particularly difficult times.
